TOYBOOK & MAGAZINE BIBLIOGRAPHY(last updated: OCTOBER, 2024)NOW OVER 900 REVIEWS!!! |
|||
![]() |
This bibliography is a combination of what's on my shelves and what references I've come across in search of other titles. Those bibliography entries that have this |
||
ADDING NEW FEATURES!FEATURE 1: (as of January 2007) I see no reason not to add links to designer's websites in the bibliography if they are available and I have permission from them, so I will be adding this as a new feature to help crafters find the patterns they want from the designers they love. I am also adding dedicated pages for designers who either self-published a lot of individual patterns you might not otherwise be aware of, or published in magazines, and thus aren't easily accessible unless you happened to subscribe to that magazine during the time period they were publishing(see newest entries for Alan Dart, Geri Milano, and Colette Wolff!). FEATURE 2: As this bibliography grows, I think it will be harder to find what sorts of books you're looking for without wading through a lot of reviews and guessing by title, so I'm adding icons to each listing to represent at a quick visual glance what you can expect to find in this book. This feature is a long way from complete, as it will require me to go through (once again) all the books I own to check the categories any given book may have patterns for.
|
|||
My main claim to fame is the magazine section at the bottom of this page. There I've listed all the magazines I'm aware of that were either exclusively about soft toys and dolls, or regularly published patterns of the same. All my bibliography pages have a magazine section. Many of these magazine titles have Reviews- pages where I've not only given you all the bibliography information available to me, but if I have a significant number of issues, then the table of contents of all the issues I have. I'm constantly adding to it. |
ALPHABETICAL INDEX BY AUTHORS' LAST NAMES
Like all reviewers, I have my prejudices, and no matter how hard I try, they are going to affect how I see a designer's work. Remember that I personally have never published a craft book, and have no credentials whatsoever other than decades of experience using said books, and that an experienced publisher thought enough of these designer's works to go to the great expense and time intensive trouble to turn their work into a product we could buy and enjoy. Please keep this in mind when looking over an entry and trying to form your own opinions from what scant information I give you! Reviews are broken down into as many as four(4) parts:
PATTERN RATING(0 to 5 stars)- Zero meaning patterns aren't provided with the book (yes, there are a couple), and each listing can have a maximum of 5 stars if the 1)designs are appealing, 2)patterns are full-sized and don't have to be enlarged 3)they have the seam allowance marked on them(this is a pet peeve of mine, so it gets its own star), 4)there is either a lot of variety here, or very unusual patterns I haven't seen elsewhere - i.e- not yet another teddy bear or duck, 5)patterns are very well marked to help the crafter figure out how to put the toy together, even if the instructions get separated and lost.

AMIGURUMI is a Japanese word that means simply "crochet or knit stuffed toys". In Japan, they are typically pretty small, and cute. Very, very cute. Other crochet and knit stuffed toys are not necessarily tiny as the Japanese toys, but I've gone ahead and collected all the books and magazines I know about under the AMIGURUMI category, though there will be links further down under "Crochet" and "Knitted". I am only listing those translated into English for the nonce, though the Japanese language books are charted, so really, anyone can read them. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

ED & STEVIE BALDWIN ran a business called The Family Workshop based in Bixby, Oklahoma. They were a husband and wife team who published a large number of craft books that covered a wide spectrum. |
COATS & CLARK I've moved most of these booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. Most are not soft toy or doll books, so you'll have to scroll through the list to pick them out. I'd been piecing together a comprehensive list of all the thread mill booklets published over the decades - and Coats & Clark was the 800 lb. gorilla in the thread industry - for over a decade, and then my friend, the amazing Becky Clark, filled in the rest of the list in just a few days. We have Becky to thank for the links to availabe pdfs of many of the early books as well. If you happen to encounter her, be sure to thank her for all the work she's done gratis for both the Craft Bibliography Project and for CRAFTREE.COM Without her, a staggering amount of information would still be lost and wandering in the electronic ether. Step by Step Art of Making Soft Toys, by Alan Dart (HC:1994)

Alan Dart is a prolific and very talented designer of both knit and sewn toy patterns, most of which found publication in various magazines. I'm attempting to compile a detailed listing of his patterns for other crafter's reference, and would like to personally thank John Asfour from New Jersey for his vast knowledge and considerable contribution to the Alan Dart Pattern Bibliography. This page would not have been possible without his contributions. |

MARJORY FAINGES is a doller from Australia with a very long pedigree of books. She didn't really specialize in any one corner of the doll world, but wrote a great many books on whatever type of doll took her interest at the time.

FASHION DOLLS is a bit difficult to juggle here. There are cloth fashion dolls - Ella DeHart gave us many and the clothes to dress them, but the 800 lb. gorilla of the fashion dolls is Barbie and her friends. There have been endless amounts of clothing patterns designed to fit them since she first debuted March 9, 1959(considered Barbie's birthday). Designers like Joan Chiara Cigler made a career on creating clothing patterns for 11.5in fashion dolls. Then there are all the many many packaged patterns that were put out by companies like Simplicity and McCalls. This page is going to take forever to set up and fill in, and I could use a great deal of help. If you collect the books and patterns for clothing fashion dolls, I'd be very grateful for a catalog of your collection to help me fill in the stubs for this bib page. JEAN GREENHOWEis a knitting and sewing master designer, and has her own company, Jean Greenhowe Designs, UK where she has original knit patterns for sale and also has some free patterns available for download.. But she is so prolific, and I think it really helps to be able to see the designs to decide whether to chase down a copy for your own library. I hope you will support her and buy from her direct. CAROLYN VOSBURG HALL is best known by me for her soft sculpture books - she was a genius at turning images into 3D soft sculpture and up there with Margaret Hutchings in her ability to teach it to others through her books. She also wrote some important quilting books that I don't think get enough attention. Most of her reviews are here in the soft toy and doll bib, but the other reviews are elsewhere, so the structure of the reviews is slightly different from the review pages I have for the soft toy bib. I decided to build a dedicated page for her work - she is quite amazing - and I hope you will help me keep her legacy alive by visiting it and browsing the books she wrote for us. My admiration for her talent and creativity know no bounds. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

MARTHA HOLCOMBE designed a wonderful line of soft sculpture dolls that will remind you of the Cabbage Patch Kids- only I think these were cuter! MARGARET HUTCHINGS was a very prolific toy designer based in England whom I admire the work of very much. Geri Milano was a prolific and very talented designer of China Dolls and their costumes, clothes and accesories. She designed 100's of dolls for Standard Doll Company™ of New York, sold as doll kits, in the 70's and 80's. This pattern bibliography is possible only because Geri's oldest daughter and granddaughter were willing to work with me to provide this wonderful Geri Milano Pattern Bibliography. |

MINIATURE BOATS AND CARS AND PLANES have to share a page for now. I may revisit this is I discover they have as crazy amount of literataure supporting them that trains do, but for now I've set up this stub in hopes someone who is an enthusiast can help this bibliography by filling me in on what I've missed. The link is disabled for now until I at least have a good start on filling in the stubs for this page. |
|
MINIATURE DOLLS AND DOLLHOUSES I'll be migrating all the dollhouse dolls and houses stuff to this page. when I have a week with nothing pressing that has to get done. They've deserved their own page since the beginning, but there's a learning curve to this cataloging business and the soft toy bib was my first page and the one I made all of my mistakes on, of course. I have a better idea of what I need to do now, just not as much time at the moment to get it done, but I'll have this stub to remind me, and if you are a miniatures fanatic with a special library(especially of the magazines, like "Nutshell News") and are willing to help out here, please, please, get in touch. My contact page is linked to the home page. |
|
MINIATURE MILITARY MODELS AND DIORAMAS is probably what I have the most of in the way of miniatures literature - yes, I'm aware I'm a girl. I used to love to wargame, and I was good at it. I'll fill this in as I dig out the boxes of my Osprey and modeling books... |
|
MINIATURE TRAINS AND RAILROADS is probably what I have the least of in the way of miniatures literature, and what is out there may dwarf all the other miniatures categories combined. If you are an enthusiast with a special library, I hope you will get in touch and help me fill this page out... |

JOHN DARCY NOBLE was born and raised in England, got his college degree there, but when he visited America he decided to stay, and settled in New York as the curator of the toys collection of the Museum of the City of New York. He authored several books on antique dolls, as well as creating some really lovely paper dolls himself. He wrote a great many articles for various of the important doll magazines.

PAPER DOLLS are a very large and complex category of doll that goes back centuries. People who collect them tend to focus on certain types of paper doll. There are many many books, and even more paper dolls found in various magazines. This page is a long way from comprehensive. I'm hoping that paper doll enthusiasts will see it and send me their bibliographies of access to their collections to help me fill in more details.

PAMELA PEAKE was a delightful and prolific designer of cloth dolls and toys who published between 1974 and 1997 - about a quarter of a century. Her toy books are classic and easy to use. She also dabbled a bit with wooden toys for young children that have great appeal.

JEAN M. SHERF was an extremely prolific designer who contributed projects to a wide number of the craft magazines. I'm beginning to believe Jean M. Sherf isn't just one woman, but a set of quintuplets all working under the same name and they took turns wearing the Jean M. Sherf public clothes to go to various craft shows and publishing house events... Okay, I've wandered way off topic. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

SUSAN BONSALL SIRKIS is one of my favorites. She is a miniaturist and a talented dresser of dolls and doll makers. She graced the pages of "Toy Trader" and wrote many many books. I don't quite have them all, but I'm well on my way. This woman spent hundreds of hours in museums looking at old clothes, and had the talent to draw them then make patterns for them for all of us to use. We owe her a big debt. She is up there with Joan Chiara Cigler as one of the top shelf designers of doll clothes.

COLETTE WOLFF (1929 - Oct. 23, 2020) and Platypus Publications
has her own dedicated bibliography page! Ms. Wolff published dozens of detailed patterns, newsletter and
magazine columns and has been very influential in the field of cloth doll-making, the crafter as artist, and the artist as a successful business. The biography and pictures could not have happened without Colette's neice's generosity, and I want to give
special thanks to Kristy Effinger, Ruth Wilson, and Phyllis McIntyre for sharing their wonderful
collections and making the dedicated bibliography page possible in the first place.

WOOD TOYS, GAMES, PUZZLES is a bit outside the wheelhouse of this page, but I have nowhere better to put them at the moment. I do intend to do a woodcraft bib that will include wood carving, wood burning(pyrography), chip carving, and of course, making toys, games, and puzzles out of wood. I'm setting up this page to have somewhere to put my slow accumulation of these books. I don't quite have enough woodworking books and magazines to justify the time investment, but I keep chipping away at it, so to speak. In the meantime...
In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:
