Title: Steampunk Softies: Scientifically Minded Dolls From a Past That Never Was Author: Sarah Skeate & Nicola Tedman
Publication Date: TPB:2011
Publisher: Ivy Press, East Sussex, UK
Page Count: 80
Book Dimensions(ht. x w.): 8 1/4" x 7 1/4"
PATTERN RATING: Patterns are not well marked and will need to be enlarged. They are also laid out across eachother to save space(it's a small format) BUT the pieces are tinted different colors so it will be easy to distinguish the pieces from each other - you'll just have to make several copies of each page in order to be able to cut out each piece whole. They are at the end of the book, so it will be easier to photocopy than if they were in the middle or scattered throughout because of the binding. The designs are extremely creative and engaging - I want to make them all!
INSTRUCTION RATING: The instructions are broken down to numbered paragraphs and the print is fairly small, so you'd better have good eyes. The designers are very generous with their illustrations.
BONUS MECHANICS RATING: They are quite innovative in use of materials and getting certain looks from common materials. They get an extra star for teaching me some new tricks.
SUMMARY- I was extremely delighted with this book. The dolls are very creative and engaging, and fulfill the theme of the book with charm to spare. I was really happy to add this book to my collection.
