PATTERN RATING:Star Rating. I always steel myself when I realize I've bought a book that has no author, just a publishing house. It usually means work-for-hire, and that seldom means the designers' best efforts. While the designs in this book are simple, the details are well thought out and not so generic as to be forgettable. I particularly liked the eskimo(Etthen-Oolah) and his pet seal, the Honey Bee(yes, it's an anthropomorphic insect and still works for me) and the trapper Jacques. There is a mix of cloth, crochet, knit and needlepoint designs suited for the more versatile crafter.

INSTRUCTION RATING:Star Rating. Instructions are broken down to body parts and there are no illustrations to help the crafter. I don't recommend this book to anyone but an experienced crafter.

SUMMARY- It's a shame the designers weren't given credit for their designs here. I've always been curious why companies like McCalls(and they're not the only culprit) create books like this without crediting the designers. But I'm a reader who follows authors, not genre trends, too. Knowing who designed Jacque would have led me to go look for other of the designer's work to see what else they do, not go and see what other generic craft books McCalls has put out. That's just me, though, your mileage may vary.
