Ella DeHart, Cloth Doll Designer

Ella DeHart was born Sept. 15, 1904, and died Dec. 15, 1999. She designed and self-published pattern booklets and a monthly/bimonthly newsletter from the late 60's to the late 70's. I believe she may have had a husband named Thomas. That isn't a lot to know about a designer who was so prolific she may have published over a 1,000 cloth doll and clothing patterns. I don't know for sure, as I only have a small handful. None of the patterns of hers that I have include a date of any description, so the only patterns I can date are those in the newsletters - and I have no knowledge of whether that was their first appearance, or if they were reprints. Her instructions are awful - as are the instructions of many designers from that time period and earlier. Her printing standards were a little low, and most of the line drawings gracing her pattern booklets and newsletters are now so faded as to be hard to see. But the range and substance of her patterns are wonderful. She ran a wide range of sized dolls, but most of what I have are for 11 1/2"-12" sized fashion dolls (i.e.- Barbie, if you weren't making one of her cloth dolls to go with the wonderful costumes she designed). The picture of her is from her Spring 1973 editorial page in "Ella's Doll Publication." I am still trying to find a relative who can fill me in on more of this lady's life and find out who currently owns her copyright, or if it's been orphaned(I hope not!). If you have any details, please contact me.

October 2008:

I ran across a small lot of Ella DeHart's patterns quite by accident on e-bay, and was immediately charmed. A few more lots came up, so I bid on those too. But they are apparently a very rare occurence, so it is going to take me many years to fill in even a portion of this. I found her patterns so varied and delightful, though, and the mystery of her intriguing, that I'm going to document my search for information on this talented designer.

I discovered Ella DeHart's patterns and folksy newsletter (reminds me a lot of Toy Trader - only with lots of patterns!) and began searching for more. I began this odyssey with 6 of her newsletters and 8 pattern booklets. I did a websearch on her name and general address, and came up with the stub of an obituary for her posted in the North County Times newspaper of Fallbrook, California. This is what it said:

Ella Donna DeHart: died age 95; husband: Thomas; Born 1904 New York, NY; Place of Death: Fallbrook Dec. 15, 1999

I wrote the obituaries editor asking if they had a clipping service so I could get the full obituary, and possibly the name of the person who submitted it, hoping to locate family members. They do not keep records as far back as 1999 on premises, but I was referred to the research librarian at their local library, who for $10 would find the obituary for me. She only works 30 hours a week. The kind editor called me and gave me her phone number and other contact information.

I will contact the librarian and send her the $10 to do the search for me. In the meantime, I had other avenues to pursue. I considered doing a mass mailing of query letters and SASE's to all antique shops, doll clubs, used book stores and nonchain fabric and quilt shops in the Fallbrook area, and have gathered the addresses to do so. This would be a couple hundred dollar undertaking, so while I have the information to try it, I'm going to search for less expensive ways to discover more. I could call all these places, but a letter has more weight, and can be passed to people of interest, while a phone call is forgotten as soon as they hang up. I also had the idea of sending the same query and SASE to all the DeHart's in California, on the assumption that a few of them are probably relatives and may know a bit more about Ella Donna DeHart that they would be willing to talk about. There are currently 100 DeHarts living in California. Some of them are probably duplicate addresses for married women who took the DeHart name when they married and could be weeded out of the mailing list by comparing addresses - still more money than I can't afford to spend right now. While I was thinking about it one day, and doing a search of the name on e-bay, I ran across a hit for a census report for New York in 1910. I contacted the geniologist and asked him if the reference matched the few facts I had and the geniologist came back with more information than I had before:

Social Security Death Index:
Ella Dehart: Born: Sept. 16, 1904; Died: Dec. 10, 1999 in residence: 92028(zipcode?) Fallbrook, San Diego, California; SSN received in New York (1951-1952)

This same geneologist sent me census information on a 9-year old Ella DeHart listed in the 1910 United States Federal Census as well.

I was very excited about this census information for about 5 minutes, then recalled that Ella Dehart had a husband Thomas - and unless you were a movie star, you took your husband's name when you married. Census information could have been wrong about the year of birth, but it was extremely unlikely that the census information was for my Ella Dehart unless she divorced at some point and went back to her maiden name. So the one piece of new information I could count on was her birthdate, and a question of whether she died on the 10th or the 15th of December, 1999.

November 16, 2008 This is when I decided to start tracking my search here. You can skip all of this, of course, and go down to the pattern and newsletter bibliography. Researching a woman's life isn't going to interest everybody. This is for the handful of people out there who find this sort of search interesting.

I've joined a dolling group that specializes in old world/antique patterns. They had a small message thread regarding Ella DeHart about a year ago. Turned out to be just an offhand mention of her.

November, 2010:
Discovered that Ella advertised her patterns in very early issues of "The Doll Reader" - 1973, and her publication was listed in 1974. "The Doll Reader" also listed individual articles about dolls in mainstream journals, and I believe "Californian Designs Dolls from Bread Dough, Apples" by Kathlyn Russell, Collectors News, Dec. 1972, page 22(reprinted from Daily Times-Advocate, Escondido, CA) is likely an article about Ella DeHart, as she lived in that area, and one of the things she was known for was her apple dolls...

January, 2011:
Found another small handful of patterns: Bonnets circa 1860's, Peruvian Maria and Pedro, Tina 1960(16"), Down in Mexico with Lita and Juan, and Spring 1972 periodical...

March, 2011:
Found a short one-page article on Ella in "The Toy Trader", January 1972.

June, 2012:
Found a lot of 36 issues!!! There's a treasure trove of patterns, and a brief personal bio in the Sept. 1970 issue that Ella did of herself - doesn't tell you much more than what I've discovered on my own.

ELLA'S ORIGINAL DOLL PATTERN BIBLIOGRAPHY

This list is a very long way from complete. I'll add pictures of her line drawings as I find her patterns and add them to my collection - or find someone who is willing to scan pictures and provide bib details from their own collections. Many of the lovely drawings she did to illustrate her patterns are very faded. I'll do my best to sharpen the images so they can be seen clearly without destroying the integrity of the little booklets she printed her patterns in.
