SUMMARY: Here's another interesting "Home Grown" publication published by an individual with a love for his subject. This one is fairly high quality, printed on good paper, with nicely done black and white interior. The articles are interesting, and reveals he had fairly good ties to NIADA and was able to conduct interviews with interesting artists, as well as sprinkling in some "How To" articles. He aimed high - for a truly international range of doll artists and doll related events and styles. I ran across two issues purely by accident, was gifted a few more issues directly from the publisher, and only seven years later, finally found two more - so, just one to go? Mr. Shishido could not remember when he ceased publication...
I've found out from Mr. Shishido himself that he folded International Doll Revue for economic reasons. He lived in Hawaii and was unable to travel to the states to the doll shows and other venues to hand out samples and grow his subscription list.
Excerpted e-mail I received from the Editor/Publisher Oct. 14, 2014:
Hello,
I am Donald Shishido, publisher of the International Doll Revue. Happened to see your website highlighting my former magazine. Appreciate your nice comments and would like to give some background on its origination when it started in January 1978. At the time I was the publisher of my tourist magazine "Shopping Hawaii", a Japanese language free magazine for Japanese tourists in Waikiki, Hawaii.
Am not a collector or doll maker but wanted another publication because I had the extra time and noticed that doll collecting and crafting was the most popular pastime in America.
At that time I was beginning the tourist magazine without any experience at all and had to create the format, sell advertising, write the articles, do the photography and even put it together. Also did the editing and rewriting all without any experience since I had been an aircraft illustrator for 15 years in California.
My shopping magazine was a huge success and the doll magazine was sort of like a hobby and I met a lot of very nice people. Knowing what I know now, I could have produced a much fancier magazine. International Doll Revue was the second doll magazine in America, the first was Doll Castle News...
Found a few magazines you can have, the January-Feb issue which is the First Edition. (YAY!!! Thank you, Donald)
It was a fun project and fun to do, I'm 80 yrs. now and retired. Will mail 3 issues, let me know when you receive them. Best regards & Aloha, Donald
What a marvelous gentleman! I'm always happy to add background and details to these pages. I was thrilled to get Mr. Shishido's message, and look forward to adding the missing issues to the catalog.
I requested a photo from Mr. Shishido, and he sent me this handsome army photo of himself from 1954:
We've corresponded a bit about what he is doing now, and he's on ebay selling custom made private mint coins (has sold over 1,100!)
October, 2014:
I've added 3 more issues to the catalog(thank you, Mr. Shishido - and Aloha!) including the Premiere issue! I'm really excited about this. It's a title I've looked for more issues of for years and had no luck. I was very fortunate the publisher/editor happened to run across my review. Only two issues to go!
November, 2020:
I found the final two issues on ebay.
