SUMMARY: The main run of "International Doll World/Doll World" is now complete!(Feb. 2012) There don't appear to be any Christmas issues after Doll World went from "National" to "International". I've got a few question marks to clear up as to exactly when "International" got dropped from the title, but that will have to wait until I can sit down with the box again.

Quality of patterns remained high, but the number per issue dwindles to one then to none even as the number of color pages rose. Ratio of articles to advertising also shoots up to about 50/50 - lots of full-page ads throughout the magazine instead of the discreet classifieds with maybe one or two full-page ads tucked in the middle somewhere that was the hallmark of the 1980's issues. BUT, there are great articles on a wide variety of doll designers and artists, and cloth doll artists are not neglected. I am also very happy with Jan Walter's (very) long-running Highlighting History series of articles researching various aspects of clothing and accessories. By 2000, it's all color and feels like Doll Reader Junior. Pretty, but not the content I'm interested in as a crafter.

(Dec. 2012)Vicki Steensma got in touch with me and confirmed that "Doll World"'s last issue was the Feb. 2003 issue, and that it was bought by Jones Publishing, who merged it with their publication "Dolls". Most of the "Doll World" patterns and rights were sold to "Soft Dolls & Animals" before that. Thanks to Vicki for filling in this information! She was also willing to give this insight into the doll collecting and making and publishing world:

"... 9/11 changed the collectible industry due to people’s interests and the need to search for what was really important in their lives and homes. Handmade doll making remained popular and a wanted commodity because people felt, then as they do now, that they needed to pay more attention to the details, and quality involved in the doll-making world. As for the major corporate doll makers, sadly the crashed economy forced them into making decisions they hated (i.e. Lee Middleton Original Dolls) by sending the “making” process off shore. That decision and trying to remain competitive by keeping their Belpre, Ohio factory going for ancillary products and accessories did eventually kill them and Madam Alexander Doll Company, bought them. Madam Alexander—who was the last stronghold in the American-made doll market,—is now sending a lot of their doll making off-shore as well. Anyone that handcrafts dolls and can keep their selling prices reasonable should be a hot commodity! The solution and the problem is what the dollmakers need in return to make their efforts profitable. Everyone needs an income! The crux of the situation is what many people felt; the nurturing, a sort of homesteading instinct that people have whether they realize what it is or not. When our homeland was attacked, they just wanted to draw inward. Nothing wrong with that at all, except it took away the buying of dolls as collectibles, which grew the industry and all things tied to it. And now along with a decade of diminished interest in doll collecting for the sake of collecting, plus the Internet market has brought on a slow—or in some cases—a sudden death to the printed magazines."

Thank you, Vicki, for taking the time to write, and for giving me permission to share your comments!
