CHAINMAIL MAKING BOOK BIBLIOGRAPHY

(last updated: June, 2017)

This is the skimpiest bibliography/collection of books on a subject I own. It's not because I haven't wanted to see more on the subject - there just isn't a whole lot out there. What is out there is mostly for making jewelry, not armor. I doubt this is all of it, but it's what I've found. If you have more information to add, please contact me! I love making chainmail - I have a shirt I made of high-carbon steel that I've had hot blued so that it has that gorgeous blue/black sheen. If you've worked with metal, you know exactly what I'm talking about!

I came to this discipline through the Society of Creative Anachronisms when I was a teenager, and have taken it back up and played with it off and on over the years. I am fascinated by its having gone mainstream with jewelry makers, who have developed some amazing variations on the basic patterns I learned mumble, mumble years ago.

I intend to supplement this bibliography with tutorials eventually with lots of pix of my equipment and examples of 4-ring, 6-ring, working with sheets, working in round (for fitting one's head), and showing how to add and subtract links in order to get a good fit. Making chainmail isn't hard with the right tools. For now, here's what reading materials I've been able to gather over the years. I only have a few Reviews up yet because I'm still looking for the main boxes of armor and armor making in my storage unit. I'm sorry I don't have more up yet, but I felt providing at least this much would be a help to some people.

There is a professional organization for knitters of chain mail(focusing on jewelry):
