FABRIC, NAPKIN and TOWEL FOLDING
This is a small but distinctive group of books devoted to make 3D models out of fabrics instead of paper, or to make 3D appliques for quilting and clothing decorations. Linen Napkin folding can be dated back to the 16th century. Illustrations of these table linen models survived in Italian and German books of the time period. My absolute favorite fabric origami, though, is smocking. My grandmother made smocked corduroy pillows in a dazzling array of pleated designs that the modern origami tesselations put me in mind of. I have a lovely collection of smocking patterns I've collected over the years, and I get to show them off here!
