PUBLISHER, but are scanned from my private collection.
SUMMARY: This is one of the coolest of the early women's magazines. I only have about 250 of around 500 issues so there's a lot of scrolling down through empty stubs of entries. Any quarters I don't have any issues of at all, I've blocked so that you won't have to scroll quite as much. I've also broken down this title's bibliography into rough decades(all the 1800s issues are on this page) with the links to the decades at the top of the bibliography and at the bottom. Just click on the link for the decade you want. The 16-page Quartos(newspaper format) extend further than I've seen stated in other bibliographies. Most of the patterns have to be mail ordered(i.e. not printed in the magazine itself) and only give an illustration and detailed description. The exceptions to this are most of the crochet, tatting, and knitting patterns. I need to make another pass through to add a subtitle "Pattern" to many listings in order to make it clear which patterns are actually in the magazine. I think I might add a list of ads in the second go through as well.
The Question and Answer section of the 1890's issues was quite extensive, often as long as all the pages with articles and workbasket projects put together. I did not enter a synopsis of these pages - maybe a project for the second run through... I also need to go back through and note which project is shown on the front of each of the covers during the time period they were putting centrepieces there.
Most of the articles on needlecraft are thinly disguised ads for the many many patterns they sold for a wide range of needlecraft disciplines. Their byline for most of them is for the writer assigned to write the descriptions for the patterns. If the designer was given, it was typically put with the photo sample of the article. Where this was the case, I usually will have put the designer's name in "()" after the name of the sample in this catalog. In 1907, the editor started adding "described by" on the byline for a while, to underline this practice.
"Everyday Housekeeping" merged into "Modern Priscilla" in March 1912, and absorbed "Home Needlework Magazine" in May 1917. "Modern Priscilla" was in turn canibalized by "Needlecraft: Home Arts" in July 1930 - not too soon. The last years of "Modern Priscilla" had no patterns in them except for mail order, articles I found completely uninteresting, and were mostly ads. The photos are large and flashy - and lacking the beautiful detail of the earlier cramped pictures. They went from having too little white space, to having way way too much. I found cataloging the handful of issues I have from the late 1920s tedious!
Anyone with more information about this publication(or other antique women's magazines), or has issues to donate or sell, can contact me through My Contact Page.
There are a ton of articles and sample photos on a wide range of needlearts - including bobbin laces, Honiton, Cluny, Irish Crochet, Princess Louise Lace... so so many. If there is a particular interest of yours, this catalog will help you find it. If you want me to collate it for you, there will be a research fee. Below is a partial listing of all the tatting articles and patterns. I will continue to add to it as I acquire the issues. Since I only have half the issues, at a rough guess I only have half the tatting articles collated and listed here. One of the projects I'd like to include with this catalog are links to pdfs of all the patterns and articles that are no longer copyright protected. If blue lettering starts showing up in the list below, it means the pdf links are now active! Pages will be shrunk to a printable size, but I will also try to add a full-size scan of the sample and a small photo of the cover for study and reference. If you need the full-size page, you'll need to contact me to ask for it.

Volume 7, Issue #12: February 1894 Page Count: 16 Cover Artist: no cover art Notes: This issue is a quarto(newspaper format, folded in half). This is likely the first issue of "Modern Priscilla" that included an article on tatting. I can't say definitely because I don't own all the early issues, but the article is written like an introduction and tutorial for tatting - suggesting it is new to the publication. The article was written by the person who provides a lot of their crochet and knitting patterns, but only goes by their initials "J.R.W." It is interesting how many contributors to these early magazines only used their initials, or only their first name, and later their husband's(by the 1940's). Was it scandalous to be a writer? Were they hiding their scribblings from their husbands? Did they not want their relatives to know?

Volume 11, Issue #5: April 1898 Page Count: 24 Cover Artist: No Cover Art Notes: I about fell out of my chair laughing when I read a small fill-in column titled "Children's Food"- it was a disguised ad for Postum Food Coffee. It began with the statement, "Many children at school," said a student of children, "appear to be stupid when they are only badly nourished." It goes on from there giving advice on how to (apparently)cure stupidity in children. I have no wish to make light of extreme poverty - but no one who could afford subscribing to women's magazines was going to cure their child of stupidity with coffee substitute...
