TATTING BOOK/MAGAZINE BIBLIOGRAPHY(last updated: MAY 2024)
Who knew there were over 1,000 books published about tatting. If someone had told me this just a few years ago, I would have laughed and told them to pull the other one. But it's true!!! There are more than a 1,000 books world-wide that at least had a chapter dedicated to the art of tatting, or included tatting patterns in its needleart offerings. Magazine titles each count as one(1) in the count, so in spite there being about a 1,000 patterns over the course of "Workbasket"'s run, I only count "Workbasket" once. But I also include any Coats & Clark booklet that included tatting patterns, even if it was primarily a crochet book. Subtract all of those, and we are still over 1,000. I find that mind-blowing. And of course there are more and more new books being published every year. I do my best to keep up, but my husband and I really love to eat. Sad, but true. I know, if I were really dedicated, I'd give up that silly habit.

AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY I've moved these booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. Not all of them have tatting patterns in them, and most have a mix of different disciplines(knitting, crochet, tatting). With the considerable help of Becky Clark, we've pieced together a list of nearly all the booklets they published! So if you were ever curious, you can now take a look in one simple click of your mouse. I'd been piecing this list together for over a decade, and Becky filled in all the blanks in just a few days. Hers is definitely the superior Keyboard Fu! In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY |
|
ANNIE'S ATTIC I've moved all the Annies Attic books that weren't published under a single designer's name to their own page. Annie's Attic does publish tatting books, and in the 1990's into the early 2000's, pushed Cro-tatting in order to satisfy their much larger crocheting audience with the look of tatting but using the tool they were more comfortable with. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: |
|
ARDERN'S CROCHET COTTON came from the Hazel Grove Mills in England. They put out a line of crochet, knitting and tatting leaflets to help promote their threads. The one picture of their threads I was able to find looked like a pearl cotton. I've managed to snag a couple of their tatting leaflets, and have begun a page for this thread mill. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: ARDERN'S CROCHET COTTON |
|
ELEANORE ARNOLD was a turn of the century designer for the Glasgo Lace Thread Co. based in Glasgo, Connecticut. They published a series of books of her designs, which were primarily crochet and some knitting, but by the 4th book also included tatting. These books are rather obscure - I had not encountered them until 2019 - but have managed to find 3 of them so far. They are long out of copyright, so I'll provide pdfs when I can find the time. BABY STUFF Baby stuff means baby bonnets and booties mainly. I'm sure I'll run across other things, but my goal here is to make a page that you can pull up to help you decide which pattern you wish to pursue to make for that precious baby. My collection is vast and goes back well over a century. It occurred to me (eventually) that others might find my compulsive list making both illuminating and useful. So I'm making several pages like this. You'll see them scattered through the bibliography. |

BELDING BROTHERS & CO. SILK MANUFACTURERS I've moved all the Belding Brothers & Co. booklets to their own page. Very few of them have tatting patterns in them, and most have a mix of different disciplines(knitting, crochet, tatting). Founded in 1863, they too produced a line of pattern books that promoted the exclusive use of their threads. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: |

NORMA BENPORATH (1900 - 1998) Norma Benporath was hugely influential in the tatting world, having published over 1,000 tatted lace designs in many women's magazines, weeklies, and newspapers, as well as offering a wide variety of beautiful designs through SEMCO, an Australian based thread manufacturer. I am still working on compiling her huge body of work, but at least have a biography up and the catalog sketched out so you can have an idea of the scope of her body of work. Judith Connors has been very generous with her knowledge of Norma, and this page wouldn't have been possible without her help. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS put out a large number of special editions - still using the magazine format ofttimes, but cramming these stand-alone editions with craft projects from a wide spectrum of craft disciplines. They often included a tatting project - from powerhouses like Mary Sue Kuhn, Marion Leyds, and Mary McCarthy. I haven't begun a catalog for BH&G's main magazine run, so I'd been putting the special editions here in the main bib - only this bib is getting ridiculously huge and slow to open. So I'm giving anyone with more than 10 entries their own page! In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

WINIFRED WORTH CLARK(pen-name) "Grandmother Clark" published at least 31 books on a very wide array of disciplines, two of which have tatting in them. Becky Clark and I have started coming across books other than the two with tatting, so like the other designers from this time period, Winifred now has her own personal page. Becky came up with some interesting biographic information on the person behind the persona. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

COATS & CLARK I've moved these booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. Not all of them have tatting patterns in them of course, and most have a mix of different disciplines(knitting, crochet, tatting). I'd been piecing together a comprehensive list of all the booklets they'd published over the decades - and they were the 800 lb. gorilla in the thread industry - for over a decade, and then my friend, the amazing Becky Clark, filled in the rest of the list in just a few days. We have Becky to thank for the links to availabe pdfs of many of the early books as well. If you happen to encounter her, be sure to thank her for all the work she's done gratis for both the Craft Bibliography Project and for CRAFTREE.COM Without her, a staggering amount of information would still be lost and wandering in the electronic ether. ANGELINE CRICHLOW(1910 - 1997) is an important touchstone in the tatting community. Her legacy cannot be overstated. Her book, "Let's Tat", is a hand-bound limited edition hardcover that is desperately sought after by serious collectors of the craft. She only produced 500 of this book, and it has never been republished. She was a tireless promoter of tatting who inspired other pillars of our community. DEXTER YARN COMPANY put out a line of crochet books to help promote their threads, and dipped their toe a bit in tatting. Their main designer was Lillian Frances Brown(for both crochet and tatting), but they also published a book of filet designs by the famous Mary Card, and later crochet books by Charlotte F. Boldtmann. Dexter Yarn Company was established in 1820, was run by three generations of the same family, then sold to Collingbourne Mills, Inc., March 1, 1927...

DMC was another thread mill that put out a lot of pattern books and leaflets to help promote their threads. Because it was an overseas company(France), I don't have a lot of their work. What I do have, I've compiled and given reviews. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: |

DOVER PUBLICATIONS is such an important presence in the crafting community - I'm not sure there is a craft they haven't contributed some important book to, and their many many clip-art and themed art compilations are such a treasure trove of useful stock art for a wide diversity of uses. They have brought back into print so many books that we would otherwise not had access to because of scarcity that I can't begin to name them all. The Dover Publishing catalog is still very much a work-in-progress, but a start has been made and they did not neglect tatting in their needlearts lines.

CAROLYN DUNN did a series of special tatting patterns that she sold as stapled sheets under the brand name "Royal Needlearts". I'm pretty sure I don't have all of them. If you happen to see that I'm missing any, would you be so kind as to get in touch and let me know the bib details? I'd also love any bibliographic information as well for this interesting designer. JANE EBORALL is an amazing designer of tatting patterns, which she allows people to download and use for noncommercial purposes from her website. I don't know of any books of patterns she's published, but she has a reputation as a great teacher and you can see for yourself all the wonderful patterns she has made available for about any subject you can think of. Her tutorials rock as well, with great visuals and clear language. She should be at the top of your "most useful website list": http://janeeborall.freeservers.com/ |

EMMA FARNES I've moved the listing and reviews of her booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. She's one of the prolific designers of the 1910's and '20's. Most of her books are for crochet and filet crochet. The few tatting patterns are by her friend Anna Valeire, who shared a publisher with her. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: |

She also runs the largest tatting supply company, is the chief distributor of Lizbeth thread, and is the primary publisher for other tatting designers. MRS. MYRTLE M. HAMILTON(1899-2003) was a designer of lovely tatting patterns and a prolific author of articles for such popular magazines as "Workbasket" and "Stitch'n Sew". We'll never know how many of the unattributed patterns in "Workbasket" were hers. I have taken the time to create a bio page stub for Mrs. Hamilton and the beginning of a bibliography of her published works. This has given me the excuse I needed to go back and reread all of her articles! I'll add more information to the bio page as I collect it this time through. For now, I've listed all the articles(that I'm aware of) as well as a list of places I've looked, and the places I haven't had a chance to look at but seem likely: |

LILY MILLS COMPANY, Shelby, NC(USA) This is a series of needleart booklets(mostly crochet, but some tatting too) that is fairly close to home, as I live in North Carolina. They were published in the 1940's and '50's. I have only a small handful of them, but will eventually make a more concerted effort to find more. When I do, I'll have this page set up and ready to receive them. I've got the ones I do have reviewed here. In order to bring up the pop-up page for the booklets, just click: |

MONOGRAMS fascinate me. I keep a special binder of just tatting monograms so I have them collected all in one place and can examine them at will without pulling dozens of books off the shelves. It interests me to see how often a particular monogram gets republished through the decades. There have been some really amazing new ones in the last year or so(It's the end of 2014 as of this writing), and it made me think that maybe others would like to see a list of the monograms I'm aware of: |

Selma and Ed Morin were contributors to the much loved periodical "Workbasket." They started their own company, designed their own tatting needle in collaboration with Boye and published in a lot of different magazines along with having their own line of books. I believe they along with Myrtle Hamilton were the backbone of tatting surviving and being revived in the 1980's. I don't have many of the patterns they sold through their mail-order business, but I've set up a page with what I know. Hopefully, someone will see this and fill in more! Here's the page: Selma and Ed Morin |

NONOTUCK SILK CO. I've moved these booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. Not all of them have tatting patterns in them, and most have a mix of different disciplines(knitting, crochet, tatting). All the Corticelli Silk Company books are also here(in order of publication- i.e., the bottom of the page). It is all the same silk mill. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click: |

ANNE ORR(1875-1946) I've moved the listing and reviews of her booklets to their own page. She was a prolific and very popular designer in the 1920's - 1940's, and is credited with innovating the split ring, a very important technique that didn't really catch on until Mary Sue Kuhn showed us all why we should have been paying attention. Ms. Orr was an extremely prolific designer - but much of the work published under Anne Orr Studios was by designers who worked for her, and not from her own hands. I think of her as the Edison of the fiber arts world. I'm still a long way from having a full run of her books, but I've managed to put together a fairly comprehensive list. PENELOPE I've moved the listing and reviews of the British Penelope booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much. I am aware of only five(5) of this line for tatting, but I could have easily missed some. They appear to be vintage 1950s, but there are no copyright dates in the booklets - I'm guessing by the style of decor in the photos. There were crochet books as well under this brand name. TATTED PINEAPPLES are especially attractive to me, and are tricky to translate from crochet. They are one of the more rare motifs - though not as rare as I thought at first. The oldest tatted pineapple pattern I have found thus far is the baby bonnet by Mrs. I.M. Wilburn(see photo to the right) first published in "Needlecraft: The Home Arts" April, 1925. Here's the link to the list:

PRISCILLA The popular women's magazine "Modern Priscilla" published a large number of craft booklets as well - three of which are for tatting. They've been reproduced and republished in many different places. I've moved the listing and reviews of the booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. Most of the booklets are for needlework disciplines other than tatting, but I will list them all on this page along with the reviews for those I actually have original copies of. "Modern Priscilla" stopped publication in June 1930, and was folded into another popular women's magazine of the time, "Needlecraft: The Home Arts", which enjoyed regular publication for another decade after the merger. I've moved the listing and reviews of her booklets to their own page so that you don't have to scroll so much to get past them. SNOWFLAKES and STARS - There are soooo many of these 5- and 6-pointed medalions, with the occasional enthusiastic 8+ pointed motif labeled a snowflake - we're talking thousands. So I have not scanned each individual medallion as I have for patterns in other categories. What I've done instead, is created a list of all the books and Etsy shops that sell pdfs, and sites like Jane Eborall's, Muskaan's and Harolahlala's who will let you download their (still copyright-protected) patterns for FREE! KAREY SOLOMON Ms. Solomon is the most prolific published designer of our time with a whopping 31 books of original designs(as of this writing), along with producing a long-running and very popular newsletter "TATTING TIMES". I'm giving Karey her own page in honor of this amazing feat. I have all the books that I'm aware of. A CD of the first 20 years of "TATTING TIMES" is now available directly from Karey - that's over 400 patterns and all the news over a 20 year period for just $25.00. She is charging a very reasonable fee, and all proceeds go to the
Fistula Foundation. In order to bring up the page of reviews for Karey's books, just click: |

Tower Press, Inc. put out a slew of Blue Ribbon Pattern Books in 1970, which were simply reprinted patterns and articles from the pages of their many magazine titles. They were printed on the same cheap newsprint as the magazines, without the glossy cover - or any artwork except a generic blue ribbon logo. If you've seen one cover, you've seen them all(see the thumbnail cover in entry below this one). I only know of eight(8) of the series that included tatting patterns(p-110, p-150, p-170, p-175, p-220,p-380, p-480,p-490). "P-160: 23 Old Time Patterns" may have some tatting in it as well, since p-170-5 have the same title. I've gone ahead and made up a page for the titles of the series I'm aware of. Keep in mind it is not complete! |

She only has one book of patterns that I'm aware of, but it is full of really fun and original bookmark motifs(see above entry). She runs an on-line supply for tatters based in Loveland, Colorado. If you like the patterns you see, buy her book as well - encourage her to publish more! The free patterns page is at: http://www.be-stitched.com/tattingpatterns.php |

WELDON'S PRACTICAL NEEDLEWORK was a women's periodical of primarily knitting and crochet patterns that ran from 1885 to about 1935 - nearly 50 years! Few issues contained tatting, but there were a few. Each issue was numbered, and the issues were subtitled for the discipline(s) they contained. Piecework magazine published a really lovely 12 volume set of reprints of the first series, which was originally compiled and released as a series of books around 1888. The reboot, labeled (new series) on the covers, began in 1886 and that was the series that ran on to about 1935. Here's the link for the review and catalog page: |

I've only recently joined myself, and have been delighted with everything I've been sent so far. Ms. Williams has a website where she offers many free downloadable patterns: http://www.cariad-tatting.co.uk/. She also has a blogspot: http://jenniferannewilliams.blogspot.co.uk/ |
MARJORIE WILLIS was a designer who self-published in New Zealand around 1945. She put out a series of four tatting pattern booklets and one for crochet, and there may have been some leaflets as well. Becky and I have done our research magic, and have come up with a good bit of interesting stuff about her. If you are interested in reading about this designer, just click: |

WORKBASKET was a long-running needlecraft magazine that also published many supplemental materials outside the pages of their periodical. WINIFRED WORTH CLARK(pen-name) "Grandmother Clark" published at least 31 books on a very wide array of disciplines, two of which have tatting in them and were published under the name "Worth", not Clark. So this link is in two places, so as not to confuse those who only know about the tatting books. Becky Clark and I have started coming across books other than the two with tatting, so like the other designers from this time period, Winifred now has her own personal page. Becky came up with some interesting biographic information on the person behind the persona. In order to bring up the pop-up page, just click:

MAGAZINE BIBLIOGRAPHYI've had a pretty good handle of what magazines carried tatting patterns - I've been collecting "Workbasket" since I was fourteen and have always kept an eye open for potential new treasure troves. But I had no clue about the newsletters that dedicated tatting fans diligently produced for other fans who actually knew about each other. Georgia Seitz included a great list in her wonderful collection "Tatting With Friends". I've been busy trying to track down the publishers to nail down more bibliography information and hopefully buy at least a sample issue or two. Anyone who knows how to get in touch, or has sample issues(or even stories about how the newsletter came about) can get in touch with me at akamoraih@gmail.com. I'd love to hear from you. |
