SUMMARY- The project organizer, Sue Pierce, had only one instruction for the 54 quilters invited to participate in this project, make it of "stitched construction of three or more layers made primarily of fabric," and had to have the dimensions of 28" x 18" with rounded corners. They were first displayed together at the Smithsonian Institution's Renwick Gallery, Spring of 1995. It then became a three-year traveling exhibit before the quilters were returned their quilts.

My only complaint is the size of the deck - these are very small playing cards. They could have made them bigger so that the fine detail of the quilts would be easier to see. It's still an amazing collection of art. When I saw the premise for it and thought about 54 commissioned art quilts I knew I had to see it. I'm really glad I did. I'm just really sorry I missed getting to see the original exhibit. If I ever play cards with this deck, it will be in card sleeves when I do, though - a side benefit of having played CCGs* for more than a decade.
