ORIGAMI AND PAPER IN MAGIC
In the 1870s, Japanese magicians would amaze crowds by producing a large square of paper, make a few flips, and end up with a paper bird fluttering in their hands. The flapping bird is the first introduction of origami in Western magic performances. Rings folded from dollar bills were popular at least as far back as the 1930's.
