SUMMARY: This craft magazine had a little bit of everything for everyone for over 60 years! "Workbasket" was the very first craft magazine I ever collected. When I complained to my grandmother about not being able to find many tatting patterns in the 80's, she gifted me with hers and my great grandmother's collection of "Workbasket" - only about 70 issues. But it got me started collecting more as I found them at garage sales, and much later, on e-bay. My only disillusionment with "Workbasket" was finding out that many of our "Family Recipes" actually came from this magazine, and didn't spring from dead ancestors who brought them over from the old country(as my great grandmother told me)! I still don't have a complete run of them. The issues from the 30's and early 40's are very difficult to come by(intact with transfer sheet - impossible!). There were paper shortages at the time, and recycling was pushed very hard. At one point they even threatened their subscribers with a letter warning them if they didn't renew quickly, their renewal might not be accepted because of the paper rationing.

I've included detailed descriptions of the transfer sheets I do have(or that were described for the issue). Most subscribers separated the transfer sheets from the issues, even if they didn't use them. I've been keeping an eye out for lots of just the transfer sheets, and have had much better luck finding some of them that way. It's like working a jigsaw puzzle face down. She NEVER dated the transfer sheets, and except for a few decades, didn't put any kind of identifying number on them either, so matching transfers with the correct issue has been very time consuming and at times frustrating!

But well worth the time. I'm a little in awe of Clara Tillotson's talent(and salesmanship). I grew up surrounded by a lot of needlework done by four generations of women in my family. It piles up. It shocks me every time I come across a new transfer sheet that has a pattern on it I recognize from my childhood. The creativity and breadth of the projects she developed kept generations of women in stitches. The original building where "Workbasket" was printed and distributed burned down some time ago, and much of the original material with it.

I have marked with an "*" those transfer sheet descriptions where I actually have the transfer sheet. I'm still researching a way to store them so that they don't continue to degrade - the paper used was of the cheapest sort. Many of my oldest are so fragile that I have to hold my breath and move veeery slowly in unfolding them. If I was able to find a description of the sheet for that issue, either in the previews of the previous issue, or otherwise, I've added it to the entry to help me in my own search to unite the transfer sheet with its issue. The early transfer sheets came marked with the number printed on the Vol/issue number line, though I have found one sheet with a stamp warning that it was a substitution for the original sheet and the numbers would not match. I don't know if this meant that some people got the corresponding sheet and when they ran out they substituted the other, or if everyone got the substitute sheet. The issue I'm referring to is the December 1942(Vol.8#3) which I have the C986 sheet for instead of the C987. Some people got the same transfer twice??? That's all likely too much information, but Someone may have a bigger collection than me and be able to educate me on this. :)

I've seen issues from the first two years go for over $100 an issue - way too steep for my meager budget. I got extremely lucky to find the first 24 issues(sans transfers) with a Buy It Now price that was within my budget, so you get to see what the covers look like and what few patterns were in them - they were mostly advertising of pattern sheets and testimonials. I got them cheap because none of the transfer sheets were with them. The earliest transfer sheets were blue-line instead of red-line, though Mrs. Tillotson was really pushing her NUMO transfers in the early issues. I've given the line color, size of the sheet, and what description I can for each one. I am still missing some of the issues between Oct. 1937 and 1942, but have placeholder copies thanks to Sytske at https://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org/ . But I have a complete run of the issues from 1943 till "Workbasket" closed shop in March 1996. All the cover scans are from my personal collection, and while I did my best to present the best image possible, some of my covers are pretty pounded.

I didn't include the advertising in the contents list, except for the patterns that Modern Handcraft/KC Publishing put out themselves, which would have tripled the time it took to complete these pages! The Postum ads in particular are a hoot. Almost all the early issues came with a Transfer sheet, that often had cloth doll and animal patterns on them, as well as hot pad patterns, quilting blocks, plywood cutout patterns for the yard and garden, and miscellaneous interesting projects(including a coffee table!) that wouldn't fit into the small digest format. The coolest one I've run across so far is of a cloth doll and clothes patterns for WAVE and WAC uniforms! It reminded me of the story my grandmother told me of how the Navy recruiting office got into trouble for posters that suggest volunteers "Ride the Waves"...

Later issues are full of quilting and embroidery patterns, crochet and knit patterns, gardening tips and recipes, and from around 1944 up till they closed their doors in 1996, the tatting patterns that I originally collected this magazine for. I've tried to note what kind of pattern it is(crochet, knit, embroidery, wood, filet(crochet)) etc. as I went along, and put the sizes/dimensions when given. Whenever there was a designer listed, I included that as well. I have compiled separate pages for the tatting patterns and doll/toy patterns that can be accessed from the home page.

Creating a full bibliography for "Workbasket", complete with graphics, was a massive undertaking. It took about (8)EIGHT months, putting in about 30 hours a week, to complete just this run of magazines. No kidding. And of course it's not done, because I'm still searching for eight back issues and a couple hundred transfers! If you need to copy and paste an entry, or grab an individual graphic, you have my permission. All I ask is that you attribute where you got the info from. That allows others to know the source, and protects you from my mistakes.

If you come across an error, please do not hesitate to contact me and correct me! While I try to be careful, I am one person with no editor, and mistakes are going to creep in. All opinions given are my own and should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism.

The wonderful Yahoo chat group for "Workbasket" enthusiasts is gone now - I should have asked permission to publish other members' indexes here to keep them available to the public, but didn't think of it until it was too late. If you know any of the ladies who developed their own indexes, get them in touch with me. We all had different emphasis on our catalogs, so it would be really useful to others if they had choices.

Here's a link to my catalog of all the "Workbasket" tatting patterns. The list is complete. You can cut and paste it into your own document, or you can email me to send you a copy. Workbasket Tatting Pattern Catalog.

August 2017: F+W (who bought Kraus Publications, the last copyright holder for "Workbasket") has given Antique Pattern Library permission to digitize and make available the back issues of "Workbasket"! I'll be helping with this project.

December 2020: The original "Workbasket Magazine" Yahoo group established by June Myers in Sept. 2003 has migrated to

and FACEBOOK: Workbasket Magazine

Anyone with more information about this publication, or has issues to donate or sell, can contact me through My Contact Page.

Thanks for your patience reading all this - hope there were a few tidbits useful to you! Here begins the catalog of issues - all of them! Thanks to APL, I was able to download a placeholder copy of the six issues I'm still looking for. I'm still missing a great many of the transfer sheets that came with the early issues. If you have any of them, please get in touch. Pages are broken down by decades and can be flipped between at the top and bottom of each page.
