SUMMARY: I started this page with only a small handful of later issues, and wrote a plea for help to fill in more without much hope for ever seeing another issue (original max subscriptions for this newsletter hovered around 150). Doretha Albee's daughter Deana contacted me in September 2020, after stumbling across this page, and offered to let me become the caretaker for her mother's files of original issues, and the samples Doretha tatted to fill its pages. Further, Deana gave me written permission to digitize her mother's work so that I might share the pdfs with all of you. This means you do not have to take my word for how terrific they are - you can download them and see for yourselves! When I received the box from Deana, I discovered it also had the original manuscript Doretha had put together for her one and only book on tatting, "Tatting Knots & Notes Revisited." I have pdfs made from the original manuscript:

ALBEE1999_Pages1to44of83
ALBEE1999_Pages45to83of83

I had been able to review this book previously only through the grace of the IOLI lending library. Needless to say, my hands shook and I had to sit down. Thank you, Deana, for sharing your mother and her work with all of us who love tatting. I promise we will take care of her legacy and not let it be forgotten. My guild has already agreed to help me put together a cloth sampler book of your mother's tatting, so that it may be preserved but still admired.

Here's the link to the review page for Doretha's book "Tatting Knots & Notes Revisited, Book 1" where you can also download the PDFs for the book, courtesy of Deana. The rest of the PDFs for the individual newsletters will be embedded below the picture of each cover in the catalog below. LINKS ARE NOT LIVE YET. THIS MESSAGE WILL DISAPPEAR WHEN I'VE GOT THE IMAGES PROCESSED AND THE PDFS UP

This particular newsletter holds a big place in many a tatter's heart, and having them has been a point of envy of those lucky few. I found out about Doretha's newsletter because of her fabulous pineapple doily pattern, "Pineapple Heaven" that Georgia Seitz reprinted(with permission) a smaller version of in "Tatting With Friends." I admired the smaller doily, but I was determined to find the bigger version! I did find it eventually by a small miracle. This is when I became really obsessed. Doretha's letters are long and newsy and deeply personal. Doretha took great joy in her triumphs and waxed philosophical about her set backs. Her commitment to family was at times heroic. She loved to travel and visit friends - and promote tatting wherever she went. She was friends with Angeline Crichlow, and they visited whenever either was "in the neighborhood." She reprints a lot of patterns from antique periodicals that she updates the instructions for(like the rest of us, she hated "Tie & Cut", and would look for ways to avoid doing this!). She brought to a lot of tatter's attention many wonderful designs from the past, when her partner and talented designer in this venture, Pat Perry, passed away in 1991 and left Doretha without a way to fill the pages.

After some soul searching, Doretha decided to march on, soliciting original patterns from her readership and mining old publications for vintage patterns. Georgia Seitz was a contributor, along with Joy Botchlet and Dianna L Stevens. She used her dear friend Kathy Johns' book "Notables" often for filler(these were little drawn doodles that could be enhanced with small tatted flowers and hearts and butterflies to make personalized notecards). The thing that deeply impressed me with the reprints of vintage patterns as Doretha evolved as an editor is that she didn't just reprint the picture of the sample from the original source, but retatted the sample herself, updating the instructions with modern technique and notation to make them more accessible to the average tatter. She had deadlines - bimonthly deadlines - and she took the time to do this because she wanted to do it right. She always gave credit when she could, and she was always enthusiastic about other tatter's accomplishments and willing to praise them in her letters. Her letters, which always began with "Dear Tatting Friends" were newsy and often deeply personal - as though you really were a friend and she was catching you up on all the ups and downs that make a life.

I'll also put together a slideshow of Doretha's samples when my guild and I have finished putting together the pages for the cased sampler book of her work. We want to make sure those samples survive to give future generations of tatters the same wonder and awe that they inspire today. NOTE: (April 2021) I received an amazing package out of the blue from Marti Jones, who generously donated the FIRST TWO YEARS of "Tatting Knots & Notes" when it was under the original stewardship of Kathy Johns. I'm so excited I can barely sit here to type! We owe a big THANK YOU to Marti for saving these newsletters for all these years, and for sending them to us to preserve for posterity. If we're ever at the same Tat Days, supper is on me!

OUR MEMORIES OF DORETHA

Karen Bovard Sayre
I fondly remember Dorothy!! I had the opportunity to meet her several times but the time that stands out the most was the IOLI Convention in San Diego (can't remember the year). Dorothy organized the tatter's classes. She tried a new approach to tatting classes in which she organized many different teachers and topics in a one-big class. Instead of the usual 12-hour morning and 12-hour afternoon class, she created on 24-hour class with one big room for all tatter participants to be in. It was an extraordinary experience! Anyone remember that class and how many tatters were in it? Another memory of Dorothy was her telling me that she didn't know that everyone wore lace to the last-night banquet. So she went home and pulled the dresser scarf off and wore it as a shawl. It was probably the piece pictured here with her. It was exquisite, as was she!

One of the issues has "Pineapple Heaven", the original larger version in it, along with an explanation of her inspiration. Below is the cover of the Anchor book where she translated one of the diagrammed patterns into tatting. She chose the prettiest pattern in the book, of course, but I think using the diagram for her translation was genius. Cover Image Property of PUBLISHER

HOW TO MAKE THIS MAGAZINE CATALOG SEARCHABLE:
METHOD ONE(downside is it takes some effort and time):
1. Open a blank page in your favorite word processing program.
2. Right click and "SELECT ALL"
3. Right click and "COPY"
4. "PASTE" or CTRL"V" what you copied into the blank page(it could take a while depending on the size of the page)
5. Use the search function as you normally would. Try to stick to only one word, since authors will sometimes use their middle initial, then not, change names, etc.
6. Trash the blank page when you're done.

METHOD TWO(downside is you have to wade through a lot of HTML code to read the entries):
1. Right click and "VIEW SOURCE". This will bring up a second window that will give you a behind-the-stage look at my coding along with the entries. There is a search function on source pages. Use it as you would the search function for a word processor(see METHOD 1). Close the Source page when you're done.

Anyone with more information about this publication, or has issues to donate or sell, can contact me through My Contact Page.
