ELLA (Eleanor) DONNA BARBER DEHART, Cloth Doll Designer

Ella DeHart was born Sept. 16, 1904, In New York, NY, and died Dec. 10, 1999 in Fallbrook, San Diego, CA. She was born the eldest of three siblings of Russian immigrants who made a living as milliners and furriers, so Ella grew up with sewing and designing from an early age. Ella married at the age of 22, a professional photographer named Frank Canter, and they had a daughter Joane Ann Canter, who passed away in June of 2024. Ella divorced and remarried a US Marine Corps Private Thomas Orren Dehart, whom she remained married to until his death in 1986.

Ella designed and self-published pattern booklets and a monthly/bimonthly newsletter from the late 60's to the late 70's about cloth dolls. The dolls varied in size, with many elaborate outfits and accessories. She may have published over a 1,000 cloth doll and clothing patterns. I don't know for sure, as I only have a small handful. None of the patterns of hers that I have include a date of any description, so the only patterns I can date are those in the newsletters - and I have no knowledge of whether that was their first appearance, or if they were reprints. Her instructions are awful - as are the instructions of many designers from that time period and earlier. Her printing standards were a little low, and most of the lovely line drawings she did gracing her pattern booklets and newsletters are now so faded as to be hard to see. But the range and substance of her patterns are wonderful. She ran a wide range of sized dolls, but most of what I have are for 11 1/2"-12" sized fashion dolls (i.e.- Barbie, if you weren't making one of her cloth dolls to go with the wonderful costumes she designed). The picture of her is from her Spring 1973 editorial page in "Ella's Doll Publication." I am still trying to find a relative who can fill me in on more of this lady's life and find out who currently owns her copyright, or if it's been orphaned(I hope not!). If you have any details(or a better picture!), please contact me.

October 2008:

I ran across a small lot of Ella DeHart's patterns quite by accident on e-bay, and was immediately charmed. A few more lots came up, so I bid on those too. But they are apparently a very rare occurence, so it is going to take me many years to fill in even a portion of this.

I discovered Ella DeHart's patterns and folksy newsletter (reminds me a lot of Toy Trader - only with lots of patterns!) and began searching for more. I began this odyssey with 6 of her newsletters and 8 pattern booklets. I did a websearch on her name and general address, and came up with the stub of an obituary for her posted in the North County Times newspaper of Fallbrook, California. This is what it said:

Ella Donna DeHart: died age 95; husband: Thomas; Born 1904 New York, NY; Place of Death: Fallbrook Dec. 15, 1999 (the date is wrong, she died on the 10th of that month)

I wrote the obituaries editor asking if they had a clipping service so I could get the full obituary, and possibly the name of the person who submitted it, hoping to locate family members. They do not keep records as far back as 1999 on premises, but I was referred to the research librarian at their local library, who for $10 would find the obituary for me. She only works 30 hours a week. The kind editor called me and gave me her phone number and other contact information. I contacted the library, but they were also unable to locate the obituary. All the biographic information I have came from my friend Becky Clark, who's serious talent with a computer keyboard has given us a tantalizing peek into this artist's life.

There is a short one-page article on Ella in "The Toy Trader", January 1972, and I'm trying to track down a Fallbrook newspaper article about Ella's apple dolls.

ELLA'S ORIGINAL DOLL PATTERN BIBLIOGRAPHY

This list is a very long way from complete. I'll add pictures of her line drawings as I find her patterns and add them to my collection - or find someone who is willing to scan pictures and provide bib details from their own collections. Many of the lovely drawings she did to illustrate her patterns are very faded. I'll do my best to sharpen the images so they can be seen clearly without destroying the integrity of the little booklets she printed her patterns in.
