ANNE CLAIBORNE CHAMPE ORR

Anne Champe Orr(b.Apr. 17,1869-d.Oct. 26, 1946) was a very popular designer in the 1920's, '30's and '40's, and has been kept in continuous publication since the 1970's. She wrote a long-running column for "Good Housekeeping" from 1919 until her retirement in 1940. Anne Orr Studios employed at least 100 designers who produced knitting, crochet, tatting, embroidery and quilt patterns under the Anne Orr Studios business name. For tatting, she has been credited with having invented the split ring, which is so instrumental to modern design now, but this may not be correct. Her designers were not credited for their work. Anne Orr Studios was a brand name. It was Mary Sue Kuhn who finally popularized the split ring technique, with "The Joy of Split Ring Tatting", and showed us why we should all have been paying better attention.

The books Anne Orr wrote for J&P Coats and American Thread Company are not numbered contiguously with the books Anne Orr Studios published. There are also numerous reprints of her books done by House of White Birches and Dover Publications. I am separating the series out by publisher below, then adding the reprints I'm aware of at the bottom, so you'll get the American Thread Co. series first, then the J&P Coats books, then Anne Orr Studios, then the reprints. This page is still a work in progress. If you have more information to add, please use my contact page to get in touch. Also, does anyone have a photo(or photos) I can share?

Ms. Orr also published in the magazines Better Homes & Gardens, Good Housekeeping and Southern Woman's Magazine. I do not have a list of the articles or issues as of this date(March 2017). I got the magazine names from an article Georgia Seitz wrote concerning one of my heroes, Myrtle Hamilton: http://georgiaseitz.com/2005/myrtle.html.

Becky Clark's article on Anne Orr for Craftree:
Anne Orr's daughter Mary Grigsby and her family, including a grandson, lived with her until her death. Mary participated in the business and is listed on the 1940 census as a clerk in wholesale needle work. Both Anne and Mary showed a 30-hour work week in 1939 with Anne earning $300 for the year. After Anne's death, her daughters Mary and Anne are listed on several copyright renewals for cross stitch books.

Anne's occupation as listed in documents varied:
      1920: designer, at home
      1930: artist, commercial
      1940: writer, paper
      1946: housekeeper (death certificate)

She and her husband John Hunter Orr had three daughters:
      • Anne Champe Orr Callahan (2 Aug 1899 - Apr 1964) of Evanston, Cook Co., Illinois.
      • Mary Hunter Orr Grigsby (26 Sep 1901 - 11 Nov 1975) of Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.
      • Virginia Claiborne Orr Watkins (22 Dec 1907 - Sep 1974) of Lake Forest, Lake Co., Illinois.
      Anne was survived by at least four grandchildren. -Becky Clark
