SUMMARY- I ran across these quite by accident, and being an old SCAer, just couldn't resist picking up a few of them. They were a large part of the impetus to start a duct tape bib page. I hadn't realized I'd collected quite so many duct tape craft books, but this is one of my favorites. No, these are not rated for actually fighting in the SCA(rattan can leave serious bruises and break bones if you're not properly padded) - they just look cool, and are great for costuming. Mr. Erickson's books are FUN - at least I've had a lot of fun with them - and I think you would too.
That said, Mr. Erickson and his sons DID device a game to be played with the costumes you can make using their patterns and instructions that sounds about as safe to play as football - but a whole lot more entertaining for both the participants and the noncombatants. Rowboats and water balloons may be involved.
